“The Lie of July”

Time Crunch, so straight to the point!

So I stumbled upon an idea recently and I thought to share, but before I do, let me first say “Aloha” and apologies for my (somewhat controllable) absence for a minute now, it’s life, life has been everywhere and your boy has been trying to live it. However, the mission stays the same, “Edifying Content, Redefining Moment”, we’re still dealing on the same commodity; “Motivation”, our shop is still located at Inspiration Avenue and you’re probably tired of me by now, so thanks for being pleasant about my pleasantries. (Yes I know I said straight to the point, but is it your point?)

Over to the idea that I bumped into, it’s an illusion of some sort and it’s widely unidentified but grossly integrated. It’s something that keeps people in chains and puts off their light, it’s a LIE, and this lie is called “The Lie of July”. What does that mean you ask? Well, let’s see.

You know how the new year is always laden with resolutions and “I promise that I’ll” statements? Well even if you’re averse to such now, I’m positive that at some point in your life, you were neck-deep in resolution-making and “wishful goal setting”. We all know how that usually plays out though, first few weeks, there’s so much energy to achieve, but as the year gets older and draws closer to its midday, the resolutions and targets are gradually forgotten and given up on.

Now the Lie of July is this: that since it’s already past 6 months and it’s already the second half of the year, that the year is “technically” over.

SideBar: So I always find it interesting when people use “technically” & “practically” interchangeably. You know, like, I’m technically at home (just cos they’re close to home) OR, We’re all practically humans. Now figure out the issue with those statements. ‘Technically’ speaks of what is based on fact, while ‘Practically’ can be something that can be inferred as a result of considering it from a certain perspective. And if you’re still not clear, I’ve practically said all I can on this, so technically speaking, I’ve defined the terms, now you go and look into it some more.

Ahan, where was I? Yeah, the misconception that once we enter July, the year is already “winding down”. Now, I get why someone might think that, but going by mathematical terms, 6 months is gone out of 12, so how can you say the year is practically over when technically, there are ___ number of months still left? (Stop counting on your fingers, this is quick math!) As in, it’s just as if it’s another January to June, look at it that way for a sec.

There’s this pressure that falls on people around this time of year, sometimes it starts from a good place, a place of reflection and self-evaluation, before you know it, it has climbed to the realms of crippling criticism that comes cutting at curious characters & churning consuming choices. (I’m so sorry, erase everything after criticism, it was hard finding ‘c’ words that were relevant to the discourse).

My point is this: it’s all in your head! Don’t let some timeline (that’s not even technically correct) give you a false sense of underachieving. You are on the right track to achieving your goals & you’re working your ass off to do it (If you’re not, I don’t need to tell you to wake the flip-up!)

The Lie of july

That pressure, that you put on yourself that the year is “almost” over, channel it right, don’t let it consume you, use it to your advantage, don’t allow the so-called being “aware” become counter-productive. Most of the time, it’s all propaganda (don’t ask me whose), it’s not real and it’s unhelpful.

So, if at the end of all this talk, what you got was that:

  • It doesn’t matter how much work you put into pursuing your goals, or that
  • You shouldn’t pressure yourself, that you still have time to do whatever you want whenever you get around to do it. or that
  • Timelines are meaningless and resolutions and targets are crap!

Then sit back and get ready to cruise the ship of failure & disappointment. But if you know how to mix rice and stew, or plantain and beans, swallow with soup or garri and sugar, then by the forces of all delicacies around the world, get the point, mix it well, cook the points (think), serve it, eat it, digest and flipping grow!

And don’t forget… The Lie of July is real and what you choose to do with it, is up to you.

I don’t know how to sign out from this one, so I’ll just keep talking until it comes to a point where it feels like to an extent I’ve provided closure and said the necessary closing remarks, given the charge and made the call (to action). But what I like most about all this, is that you’re still here with me, waiting for it to end… And practically this post is over, but technically it now is!

Let’s get to work!

GRACE & PEACE!

  2. Honestly I had a mild panic attack on Friday. “The year is flying by!!” Kept ringing in my ear.
But this is a good reminder to slow down, breathe and take it a day at a time.

  3. “The Lie of July” is well received. Thank you. It’s a real issue to deal with which you have ably addressed.
However, it will be good for us to balance July by reflecting more intensely on the other side of the coin – “The Truth of July”.

    1. Thanks a lot for reading and sharing your thoughts.
I would think though, that the way the lie was exposed has in many ways shone light on the truth.

      1. Hear hear! People let timelines (that most times don’t mean anything) cripple them, instead of boost them!
